Broome is a busy and growing multi user port in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia. A variety of vessels and trades utilize the port including, livestock, general cargo, fuel tankers, offshore supply vessels and increasingly, passenger vessels, some of which are over 300 meters in length.

West Coast Pilots provides relief pilotage services to Kimberley Pilotage Group, who is contracted to the Port of Broome as the marine pilotage provider. West Coast Pilots also provide management and administration support services under contract to Kimberley Pilotage Group.

Pilotage and ship handling in the Port of Broome is challenging due to the large tidal ranges in the area, which are some of the biggest in the world. Pilots have to deal with resultant currents along the berth of up to 5 knots.
The Cocos Islands are an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean located 2750 km north west of Fremantle. West Coast pilots provide experienced pilots for ships entering this pristine atoll.
West Coast Pilots administration and operations are located at Pilot House in the port city of Fremantle. The building is shared with Fremantle Pilots, which creates obvious synergies beneficial to both companies. Pilot House is in close proximity to other important Fremantle based marine service providers and government regulatory authorities.
Koolan Island is situated off the Kimberley coast of Western Australia in the Buccaneer Archipelago. The Koolan Island mine and export facility is owned and operated by Mount Gibson Iron Ltd.

The high grade iron ore is shipped using panamax sized ore carriers with departure drafts of over 14 meters. The pilotage at Koolan Island can be challenging as the large Kimberly tides generate currents up to 4 knots along the berth. A number of experienced West Coast Pilots are licensed to act as marine pilots and warping masters to help ensure a safe and efficient operation. Our Pilots perform draft surveys throughout the loading operation.
Vermilion Energy’s Wandoo Oil Field is situated approximately 83 km off the northwest shelf of Western Australia, north of the Port of Dampier. Vermillion Energy entered Australia in 2005 acquiring a 60% working interest and operatorship of the offshore Wandoo field. In 2007 Vermilion acquired the remaining 40% interest in the Field. Following purchase of the platform, the company increased the fluid handling capacity on the platform from 114,000 b/d to about 160,000 b/d.

The oil produced from Wandoo A is piped to the Wandoo B platform. Oil is stored in the CGS supporting the Wandoo B processing facilities and then offloaded through flexible pipelines to a CALM Buoy located 1.2 km north of the Wandoo B platform. A floating hose is used in transferring the oil from the CALM Buoy to export tankers situated at a mooring facility. Export tankers are chartered on a spot basis to offload the crude.

West Coast Pilots provide marine pilotage - loadmaster services and marine consultancy advice on the project with our pool of experienced and qualified offshore oil and gas marine pilots.
