The Balnaves Development Project extracts oil from the Balnaves reservoir, an isolated reserve located in the Northern Carnarvon Basin, about 180km offshore north Western Australia. The subsea development processes liquids from the field for export via a dedicated floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO).

The oil field was discovered by Apache in 2009 during exploration and appraisal drilling in the Julimar-Brunello complex. The development is a joint venture between Apache and the Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company.

West Coast Pilots provide marine pilotage services and marine consultancy advice on the project with our pool of experienced and qualified offshore oil and gas marine pilots.
Broome is a busy and growing multi user port in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia. A variety of vessels and trades utilize the port including, livestock, general cargo, fuel tankers, offshore supply vessels and increasingly, passenger vessels, some of which are over 300 meters in length.

West Coast Pilots provides relief pilotage services to Kimberley Pilotage Group, who is contracted to the Port of Broome as the marine pilotage provider. West Coast Pilots also provide management and administration support services under contract to Kimberley Pilotage Group.

Pilotage and ship handling in the Port of Broome is challenging due to the large tidal ranges in the area, which are some of the biggest in the world. Pilots have to deal with resultant currents along the berth of up to 5 knots.
The Cocos Islands are an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean located 2750 km north west of Fremantle. West Coast pilots provide experienced pilots for ships entering this pristine atoll.
West Coast Pilots administration and operations are located at Pilot House in the port city of Fremantle. The building is shared with Fremantle Pilots, which creates obvious synergies beneficial to both companies. Pilot House is in close proximity to other important Fremantle based marine service providers and government regulatory authorities.
Koolan Island is situated off the Kimberley coast of Western Australia in the Buccaneer Archipelago. The Koolan Island mine and export facility is owned and operated by Mount Gibson Iron Ltd.

The high grade iron ore is shipped using panamax sized ore carriers with departure drafts of over 14 meters. The pilotage at Koolan Island can be challenging as the large Kimberly tides generate currents up to 4 knots along the berth. A number of experienced West Coast Pilots are licensed to act as marine pilots and warping masters to help ensure a safe and efficient operation. Our Pilots perform draft surveys throughout the loading operation.
Santos Ltd’s Mutineer-Exeter field is located approximately 150 km north of Dampier on the north west coast of Australia. First oil was achieved in March 2005.

The FPSO MODEC Venture 11 is installed in 156 m water depth and capable of processing 100,000 barrels of oil per day and having a storage capacity of 930,000 barrels. The FPSO was converted from an existing double-hull Suez-max tanker that meets very strict Australian environmental regulatory requirements. When a cyclone approaches, the FPSO can disconnected from the turret and evacuate to a safe place. When the FPSO returns to the field, the FPSO and the turret will be reconnected.

West Coast Pilots provides marine pilotage - loadmaster services and related technical advice to the project with our pool of experienced fully qualified offshore oil and gas marine pilots.
Shark Bay Salt Pty Ltd (SBS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui. It owns and operates the Onslow salt field, approximately 1400 kilometres north of Perth in Western Australia. Mitsui acquired the Onslow salt field in 2006, which began shipping salt in 2001.

Salt (sodium chloride) is an industrial chemical extracted from the sea by solar evaporation, and is a fundamental product in chemical and food-related applications. Traditionally used as a preservative in the food manufacturing industry, salt is also the key raw material for chlor-alkali factories that produce caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), chlorine and soda ash. The Onslow salt farms produce some of the highest quality solar marine salt (sea salt) in the world.

Pilotage at Onslow is undertaken by a number of experienced West Coast Pilots. Our pilots also perform the draft surveys and ship warping (shifting) duties throughout the operation. The facility receives handymax bulk carriers up to 190m length with departure drafts of 11.5m.
Shark Bay Salt Pty Ltd (SBS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui. It owns and operates the Shark Bay salt field near Denham, around 830 kilometres north of Perth in Western Australia. The Shark Bay salt field began operations in 1967. In 1973, Mitsui entered into a joint venture with Shark Bay Salt, and in 2005 acquired 100 per cent of the project.

A number of experienced West Coast Pilots are licensed for Shark Bay. The pilotage at the facility is reasonably unique as it is undertaken without the assistance of tugs. This is achieved safely by adhering to long established operational procedures and an intensive training program. The facility receives Handymax bulk carriers up to 180m length, with a departure draft of 9.75m. In addition to pilotage, our pilots perform draft survey and ship warping (shifting) duties throughout the operation. All pilots carry electronic portable pilotage units to ensure safe passage through the waters of the Shark Bay World Heritage area.
The Apache-operated Van Gogh oil field development is located in the offshore Exmouth Basin in North West Australia, approximately 65 kilometers north west of Exmouth. Production commenced in 2010, using the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO) Ningaloo Vision. The new Coniston development project involves development of the Coniston and Novara oilfields via a tie-back to subsea infrastructure already in place for the Van Gogh field. This project, a joint venture between Apache and INPEX, will also use the FPSO, associated with Van Gogh, the Ningaloo Vision.

West Coast Pilots provides marine pilotage - loadmaster services and related technical advice to the project with our pool of experienced and fully qualified offshore oil and gas pilots.
Vermilion Energy’s Wandoo Oil Field is situated approximately 83 km off the northwest shelf of Western Australia, north of the Port of Dampier. Vermillion Energy entered Australia in 2005 acquiring a 60% working interest and operatorship of the offshore Wandoo field. In 2007 Vermilion acquired the remaining 40% interest in the Field. Following purchase of the platform, the company increased the fluid handling capacity on the platform from 114,000 b/d to about 160,000 b/d.

The oil produced from Wandoo A is piped to the Wandoo B platform. Oil is stored in the CGS supporting the Wandoo B processing facilities and then offloaded through flexible pipelines to a CALM Buoy located 1.2 km north of the Wandoo B platform. A floating hose is used in transferring the oil from the CALM Buoy to export tankers situated at a mooring facility. Export tankers are chartered on a spot basis to offload the crude.

West Coast Pilots provide marine pilotage - loadmaster services and marine consultancy advice on the project with our pool of experienced and qualified offshore oil and gas marine pilots.
BHP Billiton's 'Pyrenees Venture' is an Offshore Production, Storage and Offtake (FPSO) facility located off Western Australia's North West coast. The Pyrenees oil fields were developed by BHP Billiton Petroleum Pty. Ltd on behalf of the joint venture partners.

West Coast Pilots (WCP) provides expert and experienced marine pilots who act as mooring and loading masters and manoeuvre offtake vessels at the facility. Offtake vessels are generally of 'Aframax' size up to 120,000 DWT. WCP also provides marine advice as required.
